Off-duty security involved in road rage shoots man who pulled gun
MILL CREEK, Wash. June 8 2019— A traffic argument between two men late Thursday night led to one of the men being shot multiple times in a Mill Creek Safeway parking lot, police said.
According to police, a 60-year-old man was upset at how another man was driving on Bothell Everett Highway and followed him into the the parking lot. He then confronted that 24-year-old man, an off-duty security guard for a private security company.
“There was some punches that were thrown and some pushing.
At that point, according to the shooter, the victim, the 60-year-old, pulled a gun on him and he, the shooter, is saying he was defending himself,” said Deputy Chief Scott Eastman with Mill Creek Police.
Police say the security guard shot the other man multiple times, sending him to the hospital for treatment.
Surveillance video released Friday afternoon shows the confrontation between the two men in the parking lot. But what happened on the road beforehand is still unclear.
“In your typical road rage, there is some sort of interaction while occurring on the road. According to the shooter, he was unaware that anybody had any concerns with his driving until he was confronted in the parking lot. And so we’re looking into that,” said Eastman.
Police say the off-duty security guard stopped at Safeway to grab a snack when he was confronted.
He has not been arrested for the shooting.
Police say he has been cooperating with officers during the investigation.
Immediately after the shooting, he called 911 to report the incident.
Police say the security guard also placed his gun on top of his vehicle as he waited for arriving officers.
Late today, police say they found the shooting victim’s gun — a .25 caliber handgun — inside his car.
The shooting victim has had surgery and is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.
