Off-duty security officer dies in fiery crash
Chula Vista CA Jan 14 2020 A Bonita man was mortally injured early Sunday morning in a fiery solo vehicle crash that occurred when his car struck some trees along Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista.
The driver was identified as Wade High, 59, a former San Diego Police officer who had been working before his death as a security guard at the San Diego Zoo, according to his son, Jonathan High.
At around 3:46 a.m., Chula Vista Police received a 911 call that a vehicle had struck two trees in the center median of Telegraph Canyon Road near Heritage Road.
When officers arrived, they found the car engulfed in flames and an adult male trapped inside. He sustained traumatic injuries to his head and lower extremities.
The man was transported to UC San Diego Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from his injuries at 4:47 a.m.
Police investigators believe the man was driving eastbound in the No. 2 lane when he veered to the left and struck the trees.
The man did not appear to have been driving under the influence.
Speed is suspected as the cause of the crash, police say.
