Officer shoots, kills armed man outside St. Christopher’s Hospital

PHILADELPHIA PA. A Philadelphia police officer shot and killed an armed man outside of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, officials said.
On Thursday, July 2, shortly before 10:30 a.m., police received a report of an “irate male” near St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
Officials said an incident happened inside the hospital on Wednesday, July 1, where the man was asked to leave, which he did.
Then, on Thursday, the man returned and was outside of the building when security told him he couldn’t enter, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel explained. The man complied and did not threaten any staff members.
In the meantime, the police department also got a call from the man’s relative who said they were concerned he may be suicidal, Bethel said. The relative said the man had access to weapons.

Officials said the officers confronted the man outside the hospital at a bus stop along East Erie Avenue shortly after.
A woman – identified as the man’s girlfriend – was also standing near him, according to Bethel.
The man pulled out a gun and one of the officers pulled out their own weapon and opened fire, shooting the man multiple times, officials said. His girlfriend suffered a graze wound.
The man was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Commissioner Bethel said his girlfriend was also injured. She was taken to the hospital and placed in critical but stable condition.
While police have not yet revealed why the unidentified man was initially at the hospital, Bethel said he may have been going through a mental health crisis.
“It’s a tragedy,” Bethel said. “You don’t know the why behind many of these cases.”
A spokesperson for St. Christopher’s Hospital also released a statement on the incident.
“We can confirm that a police-involved shooting occurred this morning at a bus stop on Erie Avenue in front of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children,” the spokesperson wrote. “The individual involved in the shooting never entered the hospital. Our Public Safety Team immediately initiated established safety protocols, including a temporary lockdown of the hospital. The lockdown has since been lifted, and our patients and team members are safe. All entrances are open as we continue to welcome patients. As this is an active law enforcement matter, we are referring all questions regarding the incident to the Philadelphia Police Department.”
The officer involved in the shooting has been “removed from street duties,” Commissioner Bethel said.
No officers were injured during the incident. Police continue to investigate.
