Okla. Sheriff’s Deputy Dies in Collision Heading to Office
Osage County OK Aug 23 2022
A veteran Oklahoma deputy was killed in a collision with another vehicle as he was heading to the sheriff’s office Friday.
The crash involving Osage County Sheriff’s Capt. William Hargraves happened at about 8 a.m., KOCO-TV reports.
Hargraves was traveling east along U.S. Highway 60 when he was struck by a vehicle that crossed the roadway as it headed south on State Highway 18, Sarah Stewart, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s director of Media Operations, told KFOR-TV.
Hargraves died at the scene. It’s not clear if the other vehicle’s driver or anyone else was injured or killed in the crash.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
According to a social media post by the sheriff’s office, Hargraves was hired by the department as a jailer in 1998. He then was promoted to field deputy in 2000.
During his time with the department, he served as a K-9 handler working drug interdiction and detection at Osage County schools and was promoted to patrol lieutenant. In 2022, he was promoted to Captain of Investigations.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Willy’s family and everyone affected by this event,” Sheriff Eddie Virden wrote in the post.
