One shot by police officer, 4 arrested outside Family Dollar in Gulfport
Gulfport MS October 8 2022 Gulfport police are reporting an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon off Pass Road. The shooting occurred at the Family Dollar store near Pass Road and 8th Avenue, GPD twee8 2022ted.
Gulfport Police Chief Adam Cooper confirmed Thursday evening that one person had been shot by a police officer outside the store’s entrance.
Four others were arrested, Cooper said.
Police were called to the store after receiving a 911 call that several people were waving firearms at passing cars. Officers made contact with five people inside of a car, presumably a Kia Soul seen in photos from the crime scene. All five attempted to flee before an officer fired shots at one of the suspects. Cooper said the person who was shot was armed.
The shooting victim was taken to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. Cooper did not release the age of the person who was wounded by a bullet. Photos from the crime scene show bullet holes in the glass doors of the Family Dollar.
A video captured by a witness outside of the Family Dollar shows a person on the ground near the entrance. The six-minute video was filmed live and had more than 21,000 views by 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
“The police just shot a little dude here near Family Dollar,” the person filming is heard saying. Later in the video, American Medical Response arrived on scene and the person near the door was put onto a stretcher and taken away from the scene in the ambulance.
Witnesses outside of the store told the Sun Herald they’ve heard that one or two people were shot by police.
Gulfport police and the Mississippi Department of Investigation had not released any details to the media at 4:45 p.m.
MBI will be the agency releasing information to the public, Ducré said. Ducré said the shooting occurred at 2:30 p.m. The MBI arrived on scene about 3:45 p.m. and will report findings in their investigation to the Attorney General’s office, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a press release. The MBI has not yet spoken to media on the scene in Gulfport.
