Ontel Security officers perform life saving measures in shooting that left 1 dead
MODESTO, Calif. July 26 2019
One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at Mellis Park late Tuesday night, Modesto police said.
Two men and a woman were sitting at a picnic table in the park around 10 p.m. when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire. Police said all three were struck by gunfire and taken to local hospitals for treatment.
“They’re the community. They’re from our community, and they’re wonderful people. And they were just here playing dominoes, and they do that every day,” said Brenda Kraft, who visits the park daily as a member of the community organization West Modesto People of Action Committee.
Raymond Green, 57, was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said Wednesday.
“A man was killed, OK. It’s sad that people don’t have any else other thing to do beside going around shooting people and making other people’s lives miserable,” resident Deborah Jones said.
Green’s sister arrived at the park Wednesday to learn more about the circumstances of her brother’s death. She said Green was a husband and a father to seven children.
The motive for the shooting is unclear, police said.
“We don’t have suspect vehicle information at this time, but detectives are actively following all leads and looking for any information from the public to help identify those responsible for this,” Modesto police spokesperson Sharon Bear said.
Before police arrived, the woman who was shot flagged down a passing patrol officer with Ontel Security Services, the company said Wednesday in a statement.
The security officer performed CPR on a victim who was on the ground as more security officers and Modesto police arrived on scene, the company said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out the family and friends of all parties involved and hope for a quick recovery for those who were and currently (are) being treated,” a company spokesperson said.
No other details were released.
Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636.
