Oregon man linked to 79 thefts from Safeway
Gresham OR Dec 3 2017 The Gresham Police Department arrested a 44-year-old man who is accused of committing nearly 80 separate thefts from Safeway grocery stores across the metro area.
Robert Christopher Bagby was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 29, at the Multnomah County Justice Center after Gresham officers arrested him on Tuesday. He faces five counts of aggravated first-degree theft.
Police said Bagby has been linked to $6,000 in thefts through 79 different cases. The investigation stretched from October 2016 to his arrest. The Safeway stores robbed include several in East Multnomah County.
Records show Bagby has been convicted of 7 felonies and 12 misdemeanors, many for theft. He pleaded guilty earlier this year after being caught stealing from Walmart. Records show he served jail time for stealing in 2012.
Safeway, along with other retailers, have urged for legislative action to address the growing organized retail crime crisis. Store officials said organized retail crime costs the industry approximately $35 billion annually in stolen goods and products.
