Paramus Home Depot Security Officer Assaulted by Alleged Shoplifter
PARAMUS, NJ August 1 2021— A female security officer was assaulted midday Wednesday after she attempted to stop an alleged shoplifter, police said.
The alleged shoplifter was arrested later on Route 17 in Upper Saddle River, caught with stolen items in the vehicle.
Police arrested Sheffield C. Brown, 53, of Brooklyn, New York, for shoplifting and assault, according to Chief Ken Ehrenberg.
On Wednesday, July 28, at approximately 12:23 p.m., the Paramus Police Department responded to the Home Depot, 520 Route 17 north, after a complaint that an individual “had stolen approximately $1,300 worth of tools and other assorted items from the store.”
Police said a female security officer attempted to stop Brown when he let the store. “At that point,” police said, “he assaulted the security person and fled in a U-Haul truck onto Route 17 north.”
Paramus officers put out a stop and hold broadcast to surrounding towns. A short time later, Saddle River Police observed the vehicle driving on Route 17. Chief Jason Cosgriff stopped the vehicle and Paramus officers soon arrived at the stop. Brown was placed under arrest and the stolen items were recovered, Chief Ehrenberg said.
Brown was transported to Paramus Police Headquarters where he was booked and processed. He was released on his own recognizance under the bail reform act.
