Parents arrested for assaulting Yuba County high school principal on campus, sheriff says
OLIVEHURST, Calif. October 16 2022
Two parents have been arrested in Yuba County accused of attacking a principal of a high school after their student was injured in a fight
The violent incidents happened two weeks ago on and near Lindhurst High School in Olivehurst and, according to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, one incident led to another.
On Sept. 28, deputies showed up at the high school after getting a call about several teenagers fighting near school grounds.
The fight, was so bad, the sheriff’s office said, one of the kids needed to go to the hospital for treatment.
The school’s principal Chris Schmidt addressed the issue that evening. Writing the following message – obtained by KCRA 3 – to the high school community:
“Disruptions like this do not align with the core values of our school, and they take focus away from teaching and learning. The students involved in this disruption now face disciplinary action, which may include suspension and expulsion. Please reinforce with your child that fighting is never an acceptable way to resolve conflict,” the statement read.
The next day after the fight, the parents of the injured juvenile, James Renshaw Sr. and Tabitha Heidbreider, showed up at the school, the sheriff’s office said. The two went into the office and Renshaw Sr. immediately began assaulting the principal, according to authorities.
Deputies arrived and arrested Renshaw Sr. shortly thereafter. Heidbreider had left the school grounds, according to the sheriff’s office.
After getting a warrant to search the couple’s home, deputies said they found a self-made gun with no serial number on it.
The sheriff’s office says it confirmed that the so-called “ghost gun” was brought onto school grounds by the parents.
After the school principal assault, the Marysville Joint Unified School District superintendent Fal Asrani issued a statement, obtained by KCRA 3, which reads:
“Schools cannot fulfill their purpose to be places of learning and happiness for students unless safety is present. That safety was compromised yesterday. A situation such as this leaves a trail of trauma that permeates the system and requires all of us to take a breath and establish our belief in this beautiful school and the programs it provides,” the statement read.
Both parents and staff members who spoke with KCRA 3 said a new security locking system was installed on the office door, which remains locked at all times.
They also said a new surveillance camera was installed just above the office door and that a security guard now stands on duty outside the office during school hours.
Renshaw Sr. and Heidbreider are facing an extensive list of charges including:
Child endangerment
Felon in possession of a firearm
Carrying a concealed firearm within a vehicle
Carrying a loaded firearm in a public place
Felon in possession of ammunition
Possession of a weapon on a school campus
Manufacturing or assembling a firearm
Assault on a school employee (Renshaw Sr. only)
