Police and mall security respond to homicide at Maui mall
Maui HI March 20 2018
A reported stabbing at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center left one man dead and sent police on a manhunt through nearby streets on Sunday, according to police.
Police took a male suspect into custody Sunday afternoon, Maui police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto said. The suspect was arrested for the offense of murder in the second degree but has not been charged. Neither the victim nor the suspect has been identified.
At about 3:15 p.m. Sunday, police responded to the shopping center for a report of a male victim who had just been stabbed, Okamoto said. Witnesses reported a male suspect fleeing the area.
Officers immediately made checks of the shopping center and surrounding streets, Okamoto said. A male fitting a description of the suspect was pointed out by bystanders at the Kahului Community Park.
Several police officers and vehicles were seen at the park. Shortly after 4:30 p.m., a man with brown hair wearing a beige shirt and jeans was seen being placed into the back of squad car in handcuffs. Okamoto said the male suspect was transported from the park to the Wailuku Police Station.
Meanwhile, less than half a mile away at the shopping center, police and mall security had blocked off the bathrooms by Macy’s on the second floor. Police were examining the scene and speaking to a man whom mallgoers said was a witness.
The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has yet to be identified.
Okamoto said that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages and very active.
