Police charge man with carjacking security officer

A private security guard’s patrol car was stolen by force as he refueled it at a Bremerton gas station early Thursday.
Soon after, police found the suspected carjacker in Poulsbo. When questioned about why he stole the security guard’s car, a Toyota Corolla, the suspect told a Bremerton police officer that he was scared.
It’s the second time this week someone has been charged in Kitsap County Superior Court with robbery for carjacking someone refueling their car at a gas station.
Police were first called at 2:25 a.m. Thursday to the Shell gas station at 3800 Kitsap Way when the security guard reported his vehicle had been taken by force.
The security guard, who works for Merchant Patrol Security Services, said he was working the graveyard shift and refueling his car when the suspect approached him and asked for a ride.
When the security guard said he couldn’t give the man a ride, as he was working, the suspect got into the passenger seat and eventually got into the driver’s seat and tried to drive away, according to court documents charging the 35-year-old man with second-degree robbery.
A struggle between the two ensued when the security guard sat on the suspect in the driver’s seat. As the two tried to control the steering wheel the security guard was thrown when the suspect turned the car right onto Kitsap Way, according to court documents. The security guard sustained an injury to his hand.
While at the scene, a Bremerton police officer learned the stolen Toyota — which now had damage to the front — was found at an AM/PM in Poulsbo, 22003 Viking Ave. NW, and the suspect was sitting in “someone’s Dodge truck.”
During an interview, the man admitted to taking the car and said the damage on the front was from hitting a yield sign in Bremerton.
“I was afraid and I took the car,” the suspect told the officer, according to court documents.
The officer asked what he was afraid of.
“He told me he did not know,” the officer wrote.
