Police shoot man with knife at Orlando bus station after security guard threatened
Orlando FL April 26 2020 Police have shot a man armed with a knife after they were called by a security guard.
Investigators are now looking at whether a man who was allegedly cutting himself with a knife posed a serious threat to pedestrians at this Greyhound station on John Young Parkway.”
“I got off the bus. We were over at the smoking section and the guy was just going crazy. He was cutting himself,” Albert Cunningham said.
A security guard and bystander called police around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Witnesses tell WESH 2 News the man with the knife was trying to run away as soon as he spotted officers.
“He was really jumpy and wanted to like run away,” Cirrocco Smart said. “He finally decided to take a lunge towards the bus department, to like, take off running.”
Officers chased the man into the Greyhound station.
“They were like, ‘put the knife down!’ and he ignored them and turned around and walked away and they shot him,” Cunningham said.
The man is now in the hospital and is expected to survive.
Three officers arrived at first but only one used their firearm, according to police chief Orlando Rolon.
“The initial take that we have from this is that, in fact, they were in fear that he was going to hurt others, not just himself, especially in a bus terminal that is very busy,” Rolon said.
The three officers who were at the station during the shooting are now on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
