Portland police kill man who tried shooting security officer
Portland OR Portland police shot and killed a suspect while trying to serve an arrest warrant in the Pearl District Thursday morning, bureau spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Allen said.
The suspect, a man whose name hasn’t been released, allegedly tried to shoot a security guard at the Safeway store in the neighborhood last Saturday but the gun didn’t fire, police said.
Detectives investigated the incident and identified the suspect, which led special-tactics teams, including the Crisis Intervention Team, to a high-rise apartment building in the area of Northwest 14th Avenue and Raleigh Street early Thursday morning.
When no one answered the door, officers blasted it open, police said.
Officers identified themselves and called out, but the suspect did not come out, leading officers to disperse tear gas into the apartment and send in a drone, police said.
Ultimately, officers shot the suspect, who died at the scene, according to police. Officials said they recovered a gun.

Chief Bob Day, speaking to reporters at the scene, said he was grateful for the officers’ professionalism and was committed to a transparent, independent investigation of the shooting.
He added that it has been “a trying several months” for the Police Bureau. The agency recorded zero fatal shootings by police in 2025 and three in 2024; this is the first of 2026.
Vince Blaney, owner of North Lake Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, across the street from where the shooting happened, said he heard a “ring of shots” as he arrived at the gym shortly before 6 a.m.
