With the anniversary of 9-11 just hours away, as a nation, we remember that day when our lives were forever changed and the security of our nation shattered.
During that day and every day thereafter, all who work in public safety have learned to be more vigilant, more aware, more proactive, and not to take the security of our country or our lives for granted.
On those daily frontlines are law enforcement and public safety personnel from thousands of agencies working collectively across our nation.
One of those groups, which are more than 1.4 million strong, are private security officers.
Working in many different capacities, these officers have been at the forefront of protecting our nation, and our people, since the late 1800s and many serve in homeland security.
Tens of thousands of these officers’ work at our airports, transportation hubs, ports, government facilities, courthouses, military bases, and governmental offices and facilities.
More than 10,000 security and sworn private police officers are on duty at any given time in our nation’s capital.
During the tragic attacks on 9-11, several hundred of these private officers lost their lives in the World Trade Center bombing while they were protecting others. All of them were true patriots and true heroes.
And since that day, another 3,616, known security and private police officers have given their lives while protecting life and property.
In today’s environment, it’s the private security officer that will more often than not, be the first on the scene of an emergency.
It will be that officer, that true first responder, who will make the difference between life and death. It will be someone not from a police or fire department that will arrive to start those lifesaving measures and who will comfort those around him.
Private Security Officers today, are called into every imaginable type of emergency, crime and
incident imaginable.
Today, it’s the private officer who protects the majority of our nation’s assets, people and property and in the coming months and years, it’ll be those officers who will be out front and center with more responsibilities on their shoulders.
Combining technology, electronic and physical security and the dedication to service, private security will continue being the difference in our world of unknowns.
