Protesters say Roosevelt Island police doing little about public lewdness incidents
Roosevelt Island NY Feb 20 2018
A protest outside the public safety office on Roosevelt Island was to call attention to the rising number of public lewdness incidents occurring on the island and the lack of response by the peace officers who police the community.
Some Roosevelt Island residents are blasting the island’s private security force over a recent series of public lewdness incidents and they are demanding immediate action.
The public safety officers are sworn NY State Peace Officers and the island’s public safety department is recognized as a law enforcement agency.
While officially, the officers say that three public lewdness cases have been reported on the island since August of last year, residents say that there’s been at least five or more.
“They want to make sure that Roosevelt Island is this Picture- Perfect place to live but, in the meantime, we aren’t getting the police protection we need here in this community,” said Joyce Short, a rally organizer.
Roosevelt Island officials had no comment.
