Providence police nab security guards use illegal emergency lights
Providence RI May 24 2022 Providence police detained two men who they said were using police lights without a permit outside of a Providence nightclub overnight.
According to police, the men — who said they were providing security for performers — had multiple loaded weapons, suspected narcotics including ecstasy, and over $40,000 in cash in their vehicles.
Shortly before 1:30 AM Sunday morning, police on patrol said they saw two heavily tinted SUVs operating red and blue emergency lights at the intersection of Thurbers Avenue and Broad Street.
According to police, the SUVs — which had Pennsylvania plates — were directing traffic and assisting with parking.
Police said they met with the vehicle operators who told them they were providing security for performers at Lit Lounge; one of the individuals was wearing a bulletproof vest.
At that time, police said they explained to both men that by utilizing red and blue lights they were representing themselves as emergency personnel which is against the law.
Police said both men showed their drivers’ licenses and one provided a “Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Certified Agent with Firearms” card.
Police said the two men were questioned as to whether they were in possession of firearms or had firearms in their vehicles; police said both men said they were not in possession of any firearms and that there were no firearms in their vehicles.
According to police, a search of the vehicles found three loaded pistols and a loaded magazine along with dozens of pills including suspected ecstasy, and over $45,000 in cash.
Providence police say Lit Lounge security gave conflicting reports about the men and their presence outside the establishment.
Both men were taken to Central Station for questioning and released; they were issued a universal traffic summons for lacking a permit for flashing lights.
The money and suspected narcotics were seized pending further investigation.
