Roanoke College Campus Safety Arrest Town’s Mayor For Public Intoxication
SALEM, Va. Sept 27 2017 A local mayor was arrested over the weekend for public intoxication.
Salem officials say Mayor Randy Foley was arrested by Roanoke College Campus Safety just before 3 a.m. Saturday and charged.
Foley says he was walking home because driving wouldn’t be safe.
Foley was celebrating UVA’s win over Boise State.
He said he took the shortest route, which happens to be through the Roanoke College campus.
Foley released the following statement:
“After an evening at a friend’s house celebrating my alma mater’s football win and other events, I realized that I should not drive home from the gathering. I chose to walk home and take the shortest route, which goes right through the Roanoke College campus. While walking through the campus, I encountered a Roanoke College security officer who was doing his job. I deeply regret my decisions that evening and profusely apologize to my family, friends, City Council colleagues and the citizens of Salem.”
City manager Kevin Boggess says he was “both surprised and disappointed” when he learned about Foley’s arrest.
“The Mayor has apologized to me and the other members of Council and he has expressed his regret for putting his family and the citizens of Salem in this embarrassing position. Randy has been a tremendous Council member and Mayor and we hope we can move forward as soon as possible,” Boggess said in a statement.
Officials say Foley has excused himself from Monday night’s meeting so council members could “properly focus on the agenda items.”
