Rochester police officer accidentally shoots his own hand
Rochester NY October 9 2018
A Rochester police officer is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the hand in a police locker room Saturday night.
The unidentified male officer was ending his tour of duty around 11 p.m. Saturday when he accidentally discharged an off-duty weapon in the locker room of a police station, according to a press release from the Rochester Police Department.
The officer was struck in the left hand and transported by AMR to Highland Hospital, where he was treated and released.
“We are fortunate the injury sustained was not serious in nature,” said Police Chief Mark Simmons, who went to Highland to check on the officer. “The officer is currently in good spirits.”
The department said it appears the accidental discharge occurred when the officer was handling the off-duty weapon — the officer’s personal handgun — as he attempted to put it in a holster.
A further look into the accident will be handled by the department’s Professional Standards Section, the department said.
The officer is a two-year member of the force.
