Rockford police chief chases down shoplifter
ROCKFORD IL May 15 2017 — Police Chief Dan O’Shea chased a shoplifting suspect on foot for three blocks Thursday afternoon before the man eventually was apprehended, police say.
The incident occurred about 5 p.m. at the Target store on East State Street. Officers met with the store’s loss-prevention personnel who said the two suspects were last seen running west from the store and entering a vehicle. The suspects — Robert Bolden and Dajuan Miller, both 20 years old and from Chicago — were located inside a vehicle in the 6300 block of East State Street.
As police took Bolden into custody, Miller fled the scene on foot. O’Shea responded to the area and pursued Miller on foot for about three blocks before he was apprehended with the assistance of another officer.
O’Shea said police chiefs occasionally get involved in pursuits.
“At the end of the day we’re all policemen and need to back each other up,” he said, “and it doesn’t matter our rank. From newest patrolmen to the chief, we all back each other up.”
Bolden and Miller were charged with retail theft and unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor. Miller was also charged with resisting a police officer. Both were taken to the Winnebago County Jail.
