Roseville 14 year old charged with shooting outside elementary school
Roseville Michigan March 8 2023 A 14-year-old has been arrested in connection with a shooting Monday near Steenland Elementary School that led to a brief lockdown, police said.
Officers were called to the scene around 3:10 p.m. on a report of shots fired near Roseville Middle School, which is north of Steenland, the police department said in a statement.
“Officers were in the area and immediately located the 40-year-old male victim, who sustained several gunshot wounds, in the roadway near Barkman and Chestnut Streets,” according to the release.
That intersection is directly outside Steenland.
“The victim is being treated at an area hospital,” Deputy Chief Mitch Berlin said in a statement. “There is no danger to the public at this time.”
The victim, identified as a Warren resident, was listed in stable condition Monday night.
Officers chased the suspect, identified as a Roseville resident, who had been fleeing on foot, police said.
They took the youth into custody near Groveland and Chestnut, according to the release.
The handgun used also was recovered.
Charges were pending Monday night, police said.
“Steenland Elementary was put into shelter in place and their release was delayed. Roseville Middle School students were already released, however, we put the school into shelter in place for any remaining staff or students due to the proximity of the building to the incident,” said Mark Blaszkowski, superintendent of Roseville Community Schools, in a statement to parents and staff.. “… All shelters in place have been lifted at this time.”
The teen in custody was not a current student, the superintendent said.
