Saddle Brook is mourning the loss of Police Officer Norma Aedo, 50, who died Tuesday evening after being hospitalized with an undisclosed illness earlier in May.
Aedo joined the Saddle Brook Police Department in 2014. In May 2018 she was recognized by Mayor Robert White and the council during Women in History Month for her service to the police department.
“It was an honor to have her serve in our police department and the residents of Saddle Brook. She was a kind and gentle person, an outstanding police officer,” said White.
Police Chief Bob Kugler echoed that, saying “She was one of the kindest police officers you would ever want to meet.”
Kugler said she had a love of animals and had recently been appointed as a Humane Law Enforcement Officer. She even had a pet skunk, he said.
“She was chosen for that role and was really looking forward to serving in that role,” Kugler said.
Condolences poured in across social media on Wednesday. In a statement, Saddle Brook officials said, “The Township offers our heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and fellow officers of the Saddle Brook Police Department on the loss of P.O. Norma Aedo #54. May she Rest in Peace.”
Kugler said Aedo fell ill about six weeks ago and was tested for the coronavirus. That test came back negative. Nor was she positive for the coronavirus when she was later hospitalized at Hackensack University Medical Center, Kugler said.
