San Antonio mall security detained drunk driver who crashed through the mall
San Antonio TX February 17 2024 Those perusing the storefronts of the Shops at Rivercenter Monday night may have gotten a bit of a show.
According to a company spokesperson for the mall, a drunk driver cruised the alley between several storefronts and the Menger Hotel.
A video clip shared to social media Monday night, February 12, shows a car parked on what is supposed to be a pedestrian zone – the alleyway just off Alamo Plaza where stores like Starbucks and Johnny Rockets face the Menger Hotel. The shopper described a man who fled his car, sending security on a wild goose chase.
“He ran around the mall ‘til he got tackled. Took out a fire hydrant. We all had to jump off the sidewalk GTA style,” X user Envy Adams tweeted Monday night, referencing the video game Grand Theft Auto. “He ran for a while too. They were struggling to catch that man.”
According to Shops at Rivercenter spokesperson, the man was driving under the influence when he hopped the curb and drove across the pedestrian zone. While the Rivercenter rep said security guards turned the man over to officers, a San Antonio Police Department spokesperson had a challenging time tracking down any kind of report related to the incident.
“A drunk driver disturbed an area that was under construction, jumped a curb, drove down a pedestrian walkway, then abandoned the vehicle,” the Rivercenter spokesperson told MySA. “Our security team quickly apprehended the suspect and turned him over to SAPD. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Customer safety is always of paramount importance to us. The Shops at Rivercenter have resumed normal business operations.”
Luckily, no shoppers were injured during the off-roading adventure, but the condition and name of the driver who left Rivercenter visitors leaping for their lives remain a mystery.
