San Antonio security officer finds victim of fatal car crash
SAN ANTONIO TX October 1 2019 – The scene of a crash that killed a man in Southeast Bexar County may have gone unnoticed for hours, according to accident investigators with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
They believe the single-vehicle crash happened at some time during the overnight hours leading into Sunday morning.
The pickup landed in a grassy field in the 5700 block of Hardy Road, not far from the Wilson County line.
The 47-year-old driver was partially ejected during the crash and died at the scene.
It wasn’t until daylight that Eliseo Cortez, who was working security and checking wells on the property, made the discovery.
“I looked to my right and I saw the grey truck flipped over,” he said. “So I immediately came back around and stopped my car.”
Cortez said he initially thought the truck was abandoned because he didn’t see anyone inside it.
“But then when I stopped on the side of it, I saw that there was a man hanging out of the truck,” he said.
After noticing the body, Cortez said he alerted his supervisor who then called 911.
Deputies arrived at the scene and soon realized the driver was dead.
Investigators were not able to tell right away whether the man had been wearing a seatbelt.
They also did not know what caused the crash, although they said they found no evidence that alcohol was involved.
Deputies said it’s possible the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.
