San Antonio students rush to aid Texas Hill Country security officer errantly shot by his own gun
MARBLE FALLS, Texas September 25 2024 — A group of Junior ROTC students from Brackenridge High School quickly came to the aid of a Marble Falls High School resource officer who accidentally shot himself, KSAT reported.
The incident occurred on Sept. 20 near the visitor parking area of the school, when the officer’s firearm discharged while he was seated, injuring his leg, according to the report.
Jonathon Huerta, Ethan and Josiah, Junior ROTC students aged 14, 16 and 17, were nearby and immediately stepped in to help, according to the report. The students quickly applied a tourniquet to the officer’s leg and called 911.
“While he was [tightening the tourniquet], I helped him because the tighter, the better,” Huerta explained.
The quick actions of the students helped stabilize the officer, who was airlifted to a hospital, according to the report. Officials later confirmed that his injuries were non-life-threatening.
“I feel like basic first aid should be taught for anyone from middle school to high school range,” Josiah told KSAT.
First responders arrived within minutes of the 911 call, and the officer is expected to recover, according to the report.
