San Diego Security Officer Murdered
San Diego CA December 29 2019
A shooting of a security officer at a homeless shelter in the East Village sent police and emergency responders to the area and caused a lockdown of the facility.
San Diego police said that they were called to the area near a temporary homeless shelter at 17th Street and Imperial Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter is next to Interstate 5, just south of the I-5 and State Route 94 intersection.
A security officer was found to be shot at the shelter called “Bridge Shelter 2” which is run by the Alpha Project, CEO Bob McElroy told NBC 7. The shelter subsequently went into lockdown and remained in lockdown around 11 p.m.
The security officer died shortly afterwards.
The suspect has not yet been arrested as of 11 p.m., and police remained at the scene to investigate late Saturday night.
There were about 128 men and women inside the shelter during the lockdown, McElroy said.
The city of San Diego opened the 130-bed homeless shelter recently in November. The Alpha Project, which also operates a shelter in downtown San Diego, was tapped to operate the new facility which serves single adults, veterans and families.
