School security guard’s gun accidentally discharges after being hung on bathroom door hook
OXFORD, MI October 5 2022— A security guard who was using the bathroom accidentally discharged his weapon at Oxford Middle School Monday, according to the Oxford Community Schools.
No one was injured in the accident and no one aside from the security guard was aware of the discharge until he came forward to report it.
In an email sent to parents, Superintendent Ken Weaver said the security guard explained he hung his weapon on a hook inside the men’s single-stall staff bathroom.
As he retrieved the weapon, the gun got caught on a small hook, causing a single round to be fired into the cement ceiling.
The security guard then reported the weapon discharge to the school district and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office as required by law.
The bathroom is located near the school field house, according to the district.
The security guard is a former police officer with 28 years’ experience who has worked for the school district for the past five years.
The district is investigating the incident and says it will take corrective action to ensure another accident doesn’t happen.
At this time, police say that no criminal charges are pending.
