School staffer knocked out during student fight, police say
Boston MA June 16 2023
A Boston Public Schools staffer was knocked unconscious and injured Tuesday when he was attacked by a student as he tried to break up a fight at the Henderson K-12 Inclusion School in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood, according to Boston police.
In a message to the Henderson School community, interim Head of School Stephanie Sibley said multiple students witnessed a student physically assault a staff member Tuesday morning. Boston Public Schools press secretary Max Baker added that the assault happened as a staff member tried to stop an altercation between two students.
According to a Boston police report, during a lunch period at about 11:30 a.m., a paraprofessional overheard a student say something inappropriate to another student and approached him about what he heard. Some words were exchanged, and the incident turned physical, Boston police said.
“The suspect pushed him again and grabbed ahold of the front of his shirt and would not let go. It took 3-4 staff members to get the suspect off of the victim as he continued to hold onto his shirt,” according to a Boston police report.
After several minutes, staff members were able to pull him off the victim, police said.
“The victim fell onto the floor during the assault and lost consciousness for 1-2 minutes,” according to the Boston police report. “Once he regained consciousness, he drove himself to the hospital with another staff member. 911 was not notified.”
The victim suffered a possible head injury and a chipped tooth, according to the police report.
“The victim did not remember what happened once he got to the hospital,” the report said.
The suspect’s parents were notified, and his father picked him up.
The names of the staffer and student have not been released.
Sibley said the student involved in the attack will face disciplinary action in accordance with the Boston Public Schools Code of Conduct and that the student may also face additional disciplinary action from law enforcement.
“We are determined to make sure that we provide the best possible education opportunity and nurturing environment for our students. And so, we’re fighting every day to provide the resources to do that,” Mayor Michelle Wu said.
In November 2021, Henderson School Principal Patricia Lampron was allegedly knocked unconscious by a student during dismissal. The student involved, a 16-year-old girl, was arrested on one count of assault and battery on a victim over the age of 60, one count of assault causing serious bodily injury and two counts of assault and battery on a public employee.
A month ago, at the Mattahunt Elementary School, which is also part of the Boston Public Schools district, a student and a staff member allegedly had a verbal and physical altercation in the cafeteria during lunch.
Also last month, three students at the Henderson School were taken to an area hospital after reportedly ingesting cannabis-infused edibles, while another Henderson student was transported to the hospital after he vaped at the school.
In March, three Henderson students were brought to a hospital after they reportedly ingested a cannabis-infused food item.
