School’s PTO president swiped $14K from group’s funds
Ocean County NJ March 9 2019 The former president of an elementary school’s parent-teacher organization (PTO) is facing theft charges after prosecutors allege she stole thousands from the school and deposited it into her personal bank account.
Jennifer Maguire, 48, was arrested and charged Tuesday with one count of third-degree theft by unlawful taking.
The Ocean County Prosecutors office said Maguire had been the PTO president at Pine Beach Elementary School until May of 2018. The office’s Economic Crime Unit began investigating her when they got information that she may have been mishandling the organization’s finances.
Prosecutors allege that Maguire repeatedly made cash withdrawals from the parent teacher organization and deposited the money into her own bank account. Over time, those deposits totaled up to $14,000, prosecutors said.
Maguire was arrested Tuesday, and released on a summons, pending court appearances.
