Scottsboro Alabama police officer shoots wife, commits suicide
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. March 17, 2022 A Scottsboro woman is fighting for her life after being shot on Monday night. Investigators confirm a Scottsboro Police officer shot his estranged wife before killing himself.
Officials say 46-year-old Stephen Miller shot his estranged wife, Amanda Miller, at the home on Berry Road. According to Scottsboro Police Captain Erik Dohring, officers received reports of shots fired shortly after 8:50 p.m. on March 14.
The victim’s sister, Laura Scarberry, Amanda Miller, was at her friend Tracy Kendrick’s home when the shooting occurred. WAFF 48 is told Kendrick is a retired Scottsboro Police Officer.
Tim Smail lives not too far from where the shooting happened and heard the gunshots.
“I heard dogs howling when I took my trash out and I heard a series of gunfire and I also heard screaming,” said Smail. “They responded fast and shut off all roads I just said a prayer.”
Scarberry says Stephen Miller, had just finished rehab for drinking and was going back to work at the Scottsboro Police Department, but was on leave at the time of the incident. She also says Amanda and Stephen Miller were having issues and she was filing for divorce.
Stephen was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and Amanda is currently in critical condition.
“It’s breaking my heart right now because I don’t know if she is going to live or if he is going to die and it hurts to know that she can’t go on with her life that she had a goal for if she is going to be paralyzed and she was the closet sister to me,” said Scarberry.
Scarberry says although she is heartbroken by what happened to her sister, she is also praying for Stephen’s family as well.
According to ALEA, a death and first-degree assault investigation are underway. Alabama SBI is leading the ongoing investigation.
