Second murder in 3 months reported at Greensboro NC mall
GREENSBORO, N.C. May 6 2017
Greensboro police are searching for two men in connection to Thursday’s fatal shooting outside of the Four Seasons Town Centre mall.
Security cameras show two men running out of the mall near the J.C. Penney’s exit at about 2:15 p.m. shortly before the shooting.
Moments later, multiple shots were fired and struck 34-year-old Sherrod Maurice Crum. Crum later died from his injuries at a local hospital.
The video and witness accounts confirm that two slim, young black males with shoulder-length dreadlocks were seen in the immediate vicinity of the shooting at the time it occurred.
One of the men was wearing a white shirt with black letters and dark pants.
The other man was wearing a white shirt with two-tone sleeves and dark pants.
Police initially said the incident began as an argument between the victim and at least one other person.
They believe Crum had been inside the mall and was killed after leaving the building.
Authorities did seize a car bearing New York plates as part of their investigation. Investigators believe the car belongs to the victim.
WXII 12 News spoke with the victims family on Friday. The man’s mother, Julia Crum, who lives in New York City said “they took my baby.”
The family says Sherrod Crum had two children, a 14-year-old daughter who lives in New York and 2-year-old daughter who lives in Greensboro.
The shooting led to lockdowns at several nearby schools for about a half hour. The mall remained open as police conducted their investigation.
This is the second homicide in three months outside the Four Seasons Town Centre.
Westley Tugman, 33, of Lenoir, was shot and killed in the same parking lot on February 18.
Police Chief Wayne Scott urged people to help solve these crimes and others that have yet to be solved.
“People out there have information that can help solve these crimes and help the families who lost loved ones,” Scott said.
