Security dog injured in roof fire at MGM Springfield building
SPRINGFIELD MA Aug 17 2019– A security dog for the MGM casino was injured in a fire at the business’ kennel Thursday.
A small section of a roof the MGM kennel on 99 Union St. caught fire at about 3:48 p.m. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, said Fire Capt. Brian Tetreault, commander of the Arson and Bomb Squad.
No one was injured but one of the security dogs was hurt by glass that broke during the fire. The dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment, he said.
The fire caused about $8,000 in damage. The cause is under investigation by the Arson and Bomb Squad, he said.
MGM Springfield employs four security officers who patrol with trained dogs at the casino in the South End. The officers and their dogs secure the property and search for explosives.
Unlike most police dogs, the MGM security dogs live in a kennel on the MGM property.
