Security guard and visitor brawl at Georgetown Community Hospital
GEORGETOWN, Ky. May 23 2017 A Georgetown family says the loss of their loved one became even harder to bear because of what happened inside a hospital.
A video people are sharing on Facebook shows a scuffle between a Georgetown Community Hospital security guard and a man. The incident took place on Sunday.
One of the people involved told WKYT’s Victor Puente they had just found out a relative, Anita Lopez, had died. She says after the doctor had delivered the news to them, the family was gathering near a room. The family says a security guard approached the group and told them to get out of the hallway.
One relative confronted the guard and said he would be contacting human resources. That eventually lead to a fight which a teenager caught on video.
Georgetown Police say they were called by workers at the hospital front desk after someone hit a panic alarm. They haven’t filed any charges connected to the fight caught on video but did arrest a 19-year-old they say threatened an officer and elbowed him in the ribs.
That teen’s mother, Serena Alfaro, says her daughter threw a tissue at the officer, but that was it. She says the security guard could have prevented the whole ordeal if he approached the family in a gentler manner.
“You know, we’re going to be upset. It’s normal for anybody to be upset,” Alfaro said. “I feel like the security guard, or anybody else for that matter, if they felt we needed to calm down, they could have came and asked nicely. There shouldn’t have been any screaming. No physically touching anyone.”
Bridget Foster released a statement on behalf of Georgetown Community Hospital saying, “The safety of our patients, staff, and visitors is always our top priority, and we are deeply saddened by the events that occurred at our hospital yesterday. We take matters like this very seriously and are thoroughly reviewing the situation with the company who manages our security services. Due to patient confidentiality and out of respect for those involved, we are unable to discuss this any further. Thank you for understanding.”
