Security guard attacked at Fort Myers Technical College
Fort Myers FL Oct 2 2018 Fort Myers Police have arrested a man who got onto a Lee County school campus and attacked a security guard. It happened Thursday at Fort Myers Technical College on Michigan Avenue.
Despite being a district school, the campus does not have a school resource officer. The same goes for Cape Coral Tech. Both schools are education centers run by Lee County Schools.
Fort Myers Technical College does have three hired security guards for the campus.
Nearby Success Academy has two Fort Myers Police SROs that can respond if needed.
Staff said that there were hundreds of people and dual-enrollment high school students on the campus when the attacked happened.
“[The] guy was walking up to us and when he walked into the school the security guard came right out, stopped him and asked him, ‘What are you doing?'” one witness said. “It was wild. I ran, I was right there, I was willing to help him. I was right on top of the scene. Me and one other student had hands on the other guy.”
Within minutes of the stranger being on grounds, the security guard at the front gate took down the intruder and called Fort Myers Police.
“He did pick him up, slammed him. He gave him a fair warning, said I’m going to put you on the ground if you don’t stop,” a witness said.
The department eventually arrested the unwanted visitor.

“A man well known to campus security guards was a few feet onto the property and refusing to leave. He pushed the guard and the guard did as he was trained to quickly bring the situation under control. Fort Myers Police were called and the man was placed under arrest.
The campus at Fort Myers Technical College has three security guards to monitor the entrances and common areas. FMTC does not have a designated SRO. It shares the campus with three other special centers and one of them, Success Academy, has two that can respond if necessary.
Cape Coral Tech does not have an SRO either, but has an elementary school right next door.
The situation was isolated to the campus entrance, over quickly, and never put anyone in danger so messages were not sent to student.”
