Security guard deploys pepper spray to stop fight at Citrus Valley High School
Redlands CA Aug 29 2019
Several students were treated for the effects of pepper spray Monday after Citrus Valley High School said a campus security guard deployed the spray to break up a fight.
An email to parents regarding the incident was shared on Facebook by a recipient. A Redlands Unified School District official could not immediately be reached for comment on the email.
The Citrus Valley school email said that two students got into a fight during lunch. After the fight, one of the students ran away and another was escorted to the health office.
“Friends of the student being escorted chased after the running student,” the school said. “At the same time, security was talking to a witness and another student approached the witness and started a verbal argument.”
School officials said this argument turned into another fight. Security officials tried to break up the fight but were unsuccessful. This prompted security to say pepper spray would be used if the fight didn’t stop. The fight continued, so pepper spray was used and the fight stopped.
Several students were near the fight and were also affected by the pepper spray, and were treated near the health office, school officials said. Those students either returned to class or left with a parent.
Carl Baker, spokesman for the Redlands Police Department, said both police and the Redlands Fire Department were dispatched to the school. No arrests were made and no citations were given.
“Redlands Fire Dept. paramedics assessed one minor patient on scene,” Baker said. “He was not transported to the hospital.”
