Security Guard Facing Manslaughter Charge in Accidental Shooting in SW Miami-Dade
Miami Dade FL November 13 2019 A security guard who accidentally shot and killed a woman at a business in southwest Miami-Dade is facing a manslaughter charge.
Alejandro Cabrera-Cruz, 54, was arrested in Friday’s shooting that killed 62-year-old Arnitryce Crawford at the business at 10998 Southwest 184th Street, an arrest report said.
The report said Cabrera-Cruz was working his security job at the business, which has multiple casino-style gaming machines, where Crawford was sitting at one of the machines.
Cabrera-Cruz had been issued a firearm by his supervisor that morning, but did not have a holster for the weapon, the report said.
Cabrera-Cruz was handling the gun “in an attempt to familiarize himself with the weapon” when it accidentally went off, with the round hitting Crawford in the back, the report said.
Crawford was taken to Jackson South Medical Center, where she died from her injuries. The report said Cabrera-Cruz was negligent in his handling of the gun and didn’t unload it properly as he was pointing it at Crawford.
“The defendant’s gross negligence while handling the firearm caused the victim’s demise,” the report said.
Cabrera-Cruz was “extremely emotional, apologetic and remorseful for the horrible accident,” the report noted.
Cabrera-Cruz was booked into jail, where he was being held on $25,000 bond Tuesday, records showed. Attorney information wasn’t available.
