Security guard, former part-time cop arrested by US Marshals for rape, kidnapping
CLEVELAND, Ohio July 6 2019— A former part-time Woodmere police officer who skipped his rape trial was arrested Thursday by U.S. Marshals.
Surfin Percy, 38, tried to run from the marshals, who chased him down and arrested him in the Stark County town of Navarre, according to a news release.
Percy was working as a security guard at the time of his arrest, the marshals said. He was sworn in as a part-time Woodmere officer in 2015 but is no longer working for the department.
Percy was indicted June 28, 2018 by a Cuyahoga County grand jury on nine counts of rape, four counts of child endangering and four counts of kidnapping.
Details of the case were not available on Thursday, but the U.S. Marshals statement said the victim was a minor. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released after posting 10 percent of a $15,000 bond.
Percy was set for trial on June 10, but never showed up. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold revoked Percy’s bond.
He was the U.S. Marshals Fugitive of the Week.
Deputy marshals, Stark County Sheriff deputies and Navarre police on Thursday afternoon tracked Percy to a home in Pigeon Run, the U.S. Marshals said.
Officers found two handguns and police identification among Percy’s belongings inside the home, the marshals said.
He was taken to the Stark County Jail, where he will remain until he’s brought back to Cuyahoga County for trial.
The marshals said local investigators are likely to charge an acquaintance of Percy’s, who is suspected of helping Percy elude arrest.
