Security officer helps Springfield police arrest armed man
SPRINGFIELD OR Dec 24 2017 — A Âlicensed security guard helped police arrest a man on Saturday following a dispute in which shots were fired at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Main Street.
Raymond Martin ÂKennedy, 32, was arrested by Âpolice Âafter he allegedly had a Âdispute with a group of men in the parking lot of the ÂDoubletree ÂApartments.
Kennedy was taken into Âcustody by a police Âofficer who received help from ÂMichael Githens, a Springfield resident and licensed security officer who does not work at the complex.
No one was injured in the shooting, police said. Â
Officers recovered a Ârevolver at the scene.
Springfield police said they responded to the Âapartments about 3 p.m. after receiving a report of an armed dispute at the complex. While Âofficers were responding, they Âreceived Âanother report that a shot had been fired from a handgun.
Two groups of individuals began to separate as Âofficers arrived, police said in a news release. The people involved were detained, and an investigation revealed that there had been a confrontation between Kennedy and a group of men. As the dispute escalated, Kennedy began to pull a handgun and it discharged, police said.
The men fled the area, and an officer found ÂKennedy near an apartment. Kennedy was wearing a ski mask when the officer confronted him and began taking him into Âcustody, police said. ÂKennedy resisted arrest, and the Âofficer wrestled Kennedy to the ground, Âpolice said.
Kennedy got back to his feet several times Âduring the struggle.
A loaded revolver fell out of Kennedy’s pocket, police said. Githens, 26, had heard the gunfire and saw the officer struggling with ÂKennedy, Âpolice said. Githens helped the Âofficer Âwrestle with ÂKennedy, which was key to getting Kennedy in handcuffs, Âpolice said.
Kennedy was arrested on charges of menacing, resisting arrest, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, police said.
Kennedy was taken to the Lane County Jail, where he was lodged on the charges, plus a felony Âarrest warrant.
