Security officer shoots shoplifting suspect during struggle at Walmart
SAN ANTONIO TX Feb 22 2021 – An off-duty security officer at a West Side Walmart shot a shoplifting suspect multiple times after he pointed his handgun at him during a struggle, according to San Antonio police.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon at a Walmart store on West Military Drive.
Police were first called to the scene for a shooting in progress.
An off-duty security officer at the store was notified about a 44-year-old man who was seen shoplifting merchandise, according to police.
The security officer attempted to confront the man as he “passed all points of sale and failed to purchase the merchandise,” the police report states.
Once the officer confronted the man by the main doors, a brief struggle ensued.
Officials said the man pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the security guard.
That’s when the security guard pushed the man backward to gain distance, unholstered his weapon and fired multiple shots at him, police said.
The man was hit multiple times by the gunfire.
When EMS arrived, they took him to University Hospital, authorities said. His condition is unknown at this time.
The security officer was taken to headquarters at homicide for a statement, according to police. The incident is still under investigation and charges are unknown as of yet.
