Security worker saves Stearns Wharf from early morning fire
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. May 29 2019 – An urgent 911 call from an overnight security worker got a rapid response to a structure fire early this morning on the landmark Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara.
Engines were rolling about 12:30 a.m. when flames were spotted between two of the boards.
The area was in the valet parking lot just past the Harbor Restaurant.
The Santa Barbara City Fire Department says it was on the scene in minutes and doused the fire. Then firefighters used tools to dig into the wood and make sure no lingering embers existed.
There was a steady wind at the time.
A fire, even small in size, is a serious risk to the all wood, highly flammable structure.
In the last week there have been at least two call outs for the fire department for smoke showing on the wharf from what’s believed to be cigarette fires. Those were both in the daytime hours.
The wharf has a staff or a special hired security around the clock for public safety and fire concerns.
The area was cordoned off this morning with yellow tape until repairs could be completed.
