Senior citizen stabs security guard at Baldwin Park grocery store
Baldwin Park CA Feb 10 20158Â A 66-year-old man with a walker stabbed a grocery store security guard in Baldwin Park after the store refused to sell him alcohol, authorities said.
The senior citizen suspect was taken into custody immediately following the 8:15 p.m. incident at the Vallarta Supermarket, 13940 Ramona Blvd., Baldwin Park police Sgt. Joe Meister said.
He first tried to buy alcohol at the store, but employees refused to sell it to him, the sergeant said.
A security guard escorted the man out of the store, according to Meister. But while in the parking lot, the man pulled a small knife and stabbed the security guard in the abdomen.
The security guard responded by spraying his attacker with pepper spray, police said. Responding officers took the suspect into custody without a struggle.
The security guard, a man estimated to be in his early-50s, was conscious when taken to a hospital, Meister said.
The suspect complained of pre-existing medical problems and was taken to be medically examined prior to booking, Meister said.
Gerardo Gonzales Marentes, 66, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He was booked at Baldwin Park police jail and will be transferred to county jail.
Booking records show Marentes is scheduled for a Tuesday arraignment at El Monte Superior Court.
