Shooting at GOP baseball practice; House Majority Whip Scalise shot
Alexandria VA June 14 2017 A charity baseball practice turned into a mass shooting early this morning when a man armed with at least one rifle targeted a group of Republican congressman at an area park.
The gunman opened fire during congressional baseball practice field in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday, hitting a congressman and wounding others, according to multiple reports.
Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise was shot and is in stable condition, according to NBC News. Two U.S. Capitol Police officers were shot, according to NBC.
“Had they not been there, it would have been a massacre,” eyewitness Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said of the Capitol Police.
Several GOP congressmen and at least two senators were present, Paul told MSNBC. They were practicing for a bipartisan charity baseball game set to take place on Thursday at Nationals Park.
At least twenty shots were fired according to one witness and the gunman hid behind a dugout.
According to another witness,a Capitol police officer, himself wounded, captured the shooter.
