Shoplifter dies in Dover police custody
DOVER, Del. Oct 11 2017 Police in Delaware say a 24-year-old man died in custody after a shoplifting arrest last month.
On Wednesday, Dover police Chief Marvin Mailey said John Manning III died on Sept. 20.
A police spokesman said no foul play is suspected and that Manning appears to have experienced “an unknown medical incident.”
Mailey said detectives delayed public notification of the death while waiting for a report from a medical examiner on the official cause of death and toxicology reports.
After police learned the results would take longer than originally thought, they released notice of his death. The medical examiner’s report is still pending.
Manning was arrested after police responded to a shoplifting complaint at a store.
He was found unresponsive in a single-person cell at the police station.
