Shoplifter tries to run over Waco police officer
Waco TX Sept 8 2017 Officials say a 26-year-old man accused of shoplifting at a local Walmart tried to run over a Waco police officer while fleeing from police during a brief pursuit Monday.
Richard Wayne Lewis, of Teague, was arrested after police were called to Walmart, 600 Hewitt Drive, shortly before noon. A store security officer identified Lewis as a suspect he believed to be opening packages, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.
When police tried to stop Lewis, he ran and got into a vehicle. Swanton said Lewis tried to run over an officer who was attempting to stop him. Swanton said other officers pursued Lewis as he fled in his vehicle. Lewis struck two other vehicles as police pursued him through Woodway and Waco.
Police stopped Lewis near the 400 block of North Valley Mills Drive at about 12:30 p.m. and used a stun gun to take him into custody, Swanton said.
Police said methamphetamine was found on Lewis after the pursuit.
Lewis was arrested and booked into McLennan County Jail on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault of a public servant, two second-degree felony charges of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and a state jail felony charge of evading arrest.
Lewis was also booked on a Freestone County warrant for evading arrest, a McLennan County warrant for theft of property and a parole violation, according to jail records. He remained in jail Tuesday with bond listed at $156,500.
