Shoplifter violently attacks Spartanburg police officer
SPARTANBURG, SC Jan 27 2018
Spartanburg police said a shoplifting suspect was also charged with assault after violently resisting an arresting officer at the Dorman Centre Walmart.
The incident happened Thursday evening.
According to Spartanburg Police Department incident reports, police conducted a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, a green minivan, in the parking lot.
Officers said a woman was driving and a male passenger appeared to be stuffing something on the sides of his seat.
The male, identified as Joseph Hettrick, would not get out of vehicle when ordered, and police said an officer forcefully removed him.
Reports start Hettrick began fighting with the officer, head butting the officer and kicking him in the groin.
Reports state the officer had to drive stun Hettrick twice with a Taser but Hettrick continued to resist and led the officer on a short foot chase, which ended when the suspect jumped into the bed of a passing pickup truck.
Hettrick was arrested and charged with shoplifting and assault and battery third degree.
Police said Walmart security accused Hettrick of shoplifting a hotspot wireless device and sporting goods items.
