Shoplifters with 6 children lead Oklahoma police on pursuit
OKLAHOMA CITY OK July 5 2018 Agencies worked together to arrest two suspects involved in shoplifting and then eluding police on Sunday.
Midwest City police said they were first notified of a call at 2:15 p.m. of shoplifting at Kohl’s and one of the suspects pushed the officer that responded.
“Another officer who was in the area engaged and attempted to stop the vehicle and they refused to stop,” Capt. Mark Teply with the Midwest City police department said. “They traveled down the interstate at not a high speed, but a few miles an hour over the speed limit.”
Midwest City police stopped the pursuit after learning there were children in the car.
Oklahoma City police also started to pursue the car but stopped because of the children inside.
“Later they got a call that there was a vehicle involved in an accident that just happened to be the car involved in our larceny,” Teply said. “Oklahoma City contacts us back, we sent our officers who were involved over here and our officers made a positive ID on the suspect who was driving the vehicle.”
The Dodge Magnum hit another car near SW 29th St. and Lee Ave.
Midwest City police arrested 28-year-old Jasmin Kemp and one other woman after the crash.
There were also six other children in the car that police needed to place in proper custody.
“Anytime we have children involved it’s a little bit time-consuming to get a hold of all the proper families and DHS to get the children taken care of,” Teply said. “That’s our first priority.”
Kemp will be facing charges of attempting to escape police and child endangerment.
The other woman arrested will be facing charges on the theft and a charge of assaulting a police officer.
