Shoplifting-gone-awry leaves Summit Co. man jailed, security officers injured
JACKSON TWP. OH Sept 10 2017 A bystander, mall security and township police stepped in when a suspected shoplifter attacked two store security officers Friday night.
A Summit County man accused of placing merchandise at Macy’s department store into foil lined bags was arrested after two store security guards were injured, according to Stark County Jail records.
Taft W. Beauford, 28, of Akron, was arrested at 6:41 p.m. in the 4300 block of Belden Village Mall Cir. NW, where, township police said, he and an unidentified person, were removing more than $3,149 in Nike and North Face merchandise.
According to Stark County Jail records, they placed the items in foil-lined bags and left the store without paying for the merchandise.
When store loss prevention officers stopped them outside the store, “a struggled ensued,” the jail records show. Two officers were injured.
Beauford was taken to the ground and handcuffed with the aid of a bystander, mall security and a township police officer, according to the jail records.
Beauford was jailed on felony charges of robbery and criminal tools possession.
The jail records did not show what happened to the individual accused of helping him.
Cuyahoga County court records show he is awaiting trial in Cuyahoga County on charges of breaking and entering, theft, aggravated theft, criminal tools possession and two counts of receiving stolen property. He was indicted on those charges stemming from his Aug. 3 arrest in Beachwood, but released after posting $5,000 bond pending court hearings. His next hearing on those charges had been set for Sept. 14.
He went to prison in 2016 for receiving stolen property.
Beauford remained jailed in Stark County on Saturday, held in lieu of $100,000 bond pending a Massillon Municipal Court hearing.
