SIX SECURITY GUARDS ARRESTED FOR EXCESSIVE FORCE IN 1 WEEK
Charlotte NC July 7th, 2023
There’s no disputing the fact that more security officers are being equipped with firearms and that many of their assignments take them to some rough neighborhoods and some challenging assignments.
There’s also no disputing the fact that the thousands of armed security officers still are not being properly trained in the Use of Force, De-Escalation and Conflict Resolution, Mental Health Crises Recognition or Advanced Firearm Use training.
With private security now more than ever stepping in for law enforcement and patrolling communities, business zones, city and county parks, schools and almost anyplace else that you can imagine, the likelihood of a negative interaction with the public is inevitable.
In just six days, six security officers have been charged with using excessive force including three security officers who now stand charged with murder.
Another security officer has been charged with shooting a man who was creating a disturbance in a San Antonio Texas convenience store and refused to leave the property. Police say that the man posed no threat and that he was only being defiant and verbally loud.
Another security guard shot a man because the person disrespected him. Police said that the man was unarmed.
And a New York City security guard working at the CVS store who attempted to detain a shoplifter, ended up stabbing the man to death during a physical altercation.
A 71 year old Harris County Texas security guard was also arrested for pointing a gun at another driver while he was in his security uniform and on the way to work.
The guard was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after investigators say he pointed a gun at another driver in northeast Harris County. That driver caught the incident on camera.
“It could have turned out really different. When you watch the video, he had his finger on the trigger,” the victim, who requested anonymity for privacy reasons, said.
And while security officers are finding themselves frequently on the wrong side of the law, there are many others who appropriately respond to crimes in progress and use only the force necessary to defend themselves or others as was the case on Sunday in Washington DC when a security officer stopped a carjacking of an elderly woman. He held the man at gunpoint on the ground until Metro police arrived.
And just last week, a heroic security officer in Las Vegas stopped a man armed with an AR-15 style rifle who was shooting indiscriminately inside the Turnberry Towers.
The USA Injury Lawyers held a special barbeque to honor that security officer hero on this 4th of July.
A color guard presentation was on hand as they honored security officer Humberto Garcia, who received an award.
His actions saved lives when he stopped an active shooter in spite of the danger that he put himself in.
Police say the man who opened fire at the property, only got one round off before his rifle malfunctioned.
When Andrew Warrender tried to fix his rifle, Gracia shot Warrender several times, injuring him.
The ceremony was part of the law firm’s 4th of July festivities, honoring veterans and law enforcement.
As with law enforcement training, all states should mandate extensive training for every person working in any area of security and require continuing education annually.
