Some security departments replacing the “security” word with “safety”
Charlotte NC September 3 2020
Some security departments have begun removing the word “security” and replacing it with the word “safety”.
For years, some college security departments have been known by the title of “Campus Safety”.
But now, with the increased rhetoric about defunding police and eliminating armed security and campus police officers from all university and even hospital campuses, some have decided to take a softer approach, at least in the name.
The director for a mid-size college who asked that we not use his name told us that their staff has been using the campus safety title for almost three years after a new school president came in and decided that their security staff should be more about safety and not enforcement.
The school officers had their metal badges replaced by cloth badges and their patrol cars marked up with the campus safety logos.
Hospitals have also begun changing their security department to a safety department with more emphasis on helping patients and staff while looking more approachable and less like law enforcement.
