Washington DC September 23 2021
A security officer was fatally shot in the District on Tuesday during a violent day in which several other people, including two children, were wounded by gunfire, police said.
The female officer, who was working as a special police officer, was shot about 8:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of 10th Street SE, said Police Chief Robert J. Contee III. He said she was on duty in the area of the shooting but gave no indication of the circumstances of the shooting.
She was working as a Metro Special Police officer, was shot and was later pronounced dead. Her name has not been revealed.
The Metro Special Police Department is a private law enforcement agency authorized by the D.C. government to provide police, security, and protective services within the District of Columbia.
The officer was working on behalf of a nearby complex, according to the D.C. police.
Police were looking for a white Camry with dark, tinted windows last seen on Wheeler Road SE going toward Southern Avenue SE in connection to the killing.
The owner and chief of the agency where she worked arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting to help with the investigation, according to Contee.
“My heart goes out to the family of this Special Police officer,” Contee said at a news briefing Tuesday night.
The D.C. police are offering a reward of $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting.
Anyone who has knowledge of the shooting should call police at 202-727-9099, or text a tip to the MPD at 50411.
