Suicidal on-duty security guard fires multiple shots during stand-off with police
RAPID CITY, S.D. March 2 2024 A tense, hour-long standoff with a community security guard who threatened suicide overnight in Box Elder ended with the man being arrested.
The suspect was identified as James Edward Brown.
Brown allegedly fired multiple shots in the air from his company vehicle during the standoff at around 8 p.m. yesterday, Feb. 28.
The incident occurred at a playground area on Centennial Street in the Antelope Ridge community after the Box Elder Police Department responded quickly to an attempted suicide call and was met by other law enforcement agencies at the scene.
Brown was eventually arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, resisting arrest, DUI, and possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated.
City of Box Elder Public Information Officer, Derek Wingfield, applauds law enforcement’s swift response.
“At the end of the day, there were no injuries. The suspect was taken into custody without injury. None of the officers were injured and there were no civilian injuries or involvement because of the way they all responded,” Wingfield said.
At the scene, law enforcement says they recovered Brown’s handgun, eight shell casings, and three live rounds.
